Cuba Libres

Wednesday 13th January 1988

We got breakfast at the cheap place by the market. The graphic sign bearing the name of the place had letters made up with rifles. We then bought some envelopes so that Declan could post his letter.

Later, we went for a walk in the square and sampled ice cream in a shop just off the square. The pineapple ice cream was great. We met Tom from Norway and Laars from Denmark who had been out drinking all night until 07:00 hrs.

In the afternoon I had to do an essay in Spanish past tense for homework and then went out shopping while Declan had his Spanish lesson. I bought some brown bread, cheese and jam for our evening meal and to make sandwiches for tomorrows assault on Volcano Agua.

My Spanish lesson went quite well, but although I can understand almost everything that Lety says, my own spoken Spanish is hesitant and simple.

The evening was spent, as usual as it was becoming routine, in Mio Cid’s. Cuba Libres were Q1 until 23:00 hrs. and once again we made the most of this discounted booze which hampered the efforts of most of the Spanish students to concentrate on their lessons.

“The Postman Always Rings Twice” was on TV but there was no sound. “The Postman Always Rings Twice” is a 1981 American neo-noir erotic thriller film starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, it is the fourth adaptation of the 1934 novel by James M. Cain. It seemed to feature a lot of shagging on a kitchen table, but everyone was disappointed that we had missed this bit of the film.

Pedro and Byrn had been to the El Salvador Embassy in Guate (Guatemala City) and found out that Declan, as an Irish citizen, would require a visa. This meant that we would not be able to join them for the weekend in El Salvador.

A friend of Pedro returned from a trip to Tikal (by air) and had plenty of money to throw about, including a Q1 tip for the barman each time he bought a round of drinks. Tikal (Tik’al in modern Mayan orthography) is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala.

It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centres of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, the site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At 03:00 hrs. we went home, but Byrn and Pedro went on to “Los Pollos”. We arranged to meet Byrn tomorrow at 05:45 hrs. at the bus stop for our pending assault on Volcán de Agua.
