Chico’s Bar

Sunday 7th February 1988

Declan went for his morning run but I stayed sound asleep until 08:00 hrs. We went for breakfast at about 09:30 hrs. after a trip to the twice-weekly greengrocers van to buy pineapples and bananas. We then walked along the shallow rocky river course to the waterfall.

It was a popular destination with native Costa Rican holiday makers. Everyone was unable to resist splashing in the refreshing cool pool, the kiddies buoyed up with flotation aids. I tried to get to the top of the waterfall to see the view from the top down.

After an intrepid scramble up a minor waterfall, I was defeated by thick thorny vegetation and steep uphill slopes. It was also extremely hot. I clambered down and we went back to the hotel to cool off. I demolished a pineapple which had dropped from where I had hung it on the wall and smashed into the ground.

I then set off in search of Declan who had gone to the Playa Grande (Great or Large Beach), about 3 kilometres away. After a trudge in the strength-sapping heat of the afternoon I got to the place where we had sat yesterday and found that Declan wasn’t there.

Tiny crabs scuttled into their holes in the sand as I continued along the beach to the wreckage of a small light aircraft which had crashed onto the beach. I encountered Declan sat in the shade of this debris, sitting on his towel after a long fruitless search for a suitable place to hang his hammock.

On the walk back we stopped for ice cream and refrescos halfway, and then at Chico’s Bar in the village for a few beers. We were joined by a German who was touring on an 80cc trail motorcycle. We had our evening meal in Chico’s. Although we all ordered different fish, we all got served the same and it was delicious, nonetheless. We ate with the Alaskan/Yukon contingent, leaving early to save money and have an early night.
