Squirrels

Above: Our hotel room at the Hotel Lucy. The windows behind me looked out onto the beach.

Wednesday 10th February 1988

Feeling very apathetic we had milk and breakfast over the road and returned to lounge listlessly in our room. Chris went down to meet his Alaskan friends who were due to arrive on the ferry this morning. We laid about for quite a while before finally heading south along the beach.

We saw a few lizards en route and a brand-new concrete bridge that seemed to lead to nowhere. We found a shady group of trees and set up our hammocks. At 14:00 hrs. I went out to explore the rock pools left by the retreating tide.

The water was shallow and very warm with just a few tiddlers and hermit crabs darting about. We read our books and dozed throughout the afternoon while a bizarre-coloured squirrel scampered about in the branches above us.

The variegated squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides) is a tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus found in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, southern Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama.

We walked back and had some ice cream and then a swim at the beach nearest to our hotel. We showered and went to Chico’s Bar at 17:30 hrs. Chris and Micheal, were drunk and swam well out to sea across the bay. Chris returned very much the worse for wear with alcohol and exhaustion.

We had a good fish meal and went next door to the hotel bar. Here we met Micheal, who hadn’t drowned as we feared. He was a skinny American Iowan in a baseball cap and tattoos comprising Papillion, scorpion, snake, etc.

He had spent four weeks in Puntarenas, much to everyone’s amusement. He sat with his radio cassette player putting out AC/DC rock music and we chatted until 21:00 hrs. drinking rum and cokes.

Back at the hotel we found Chris hugging his pillows, fast asleep, so we went to bed as well. I lost my bush hat today – what a bastado! Tonight’s mystery insect was a giant locust in our room.
